THE STORY
"Radeka Downunder Underground Motel & Backpacker Inn" Coober Pedy, Outback South Australia, is an independent, family style operated, Underground Accommodation Premises, Located in the center of town Between the BP & Mobil Service Stations.
Originally an Opal Mine from the 1960s, it was converted in the mid-1980s to 10 Motel rooms, 12 Budget Rooms and 12 Dormitories.
8 of the Motels are 3.5m under a sandstone ridge and you enter at ground level. 2 Motels are above ground with windows.
The Budget Rooms & Dorms are 6.5m Underground underneath the Motels, down 34 steps.
60% of us who live in Coober Pedy live Underground to avoid the heat of Summer.
